On the Rich Man Who Planned to Build Greater Barns.

PRAYER BEFORE MEDITATION.

My God, I firmly believe that Thou art here present. I acknowledge that on account of my many sins I am utterly unworthy to appear before Thy sacred countenance. Yet, confiding in Thy infinite goodness and mercy, I venture to address Thee, to call upon Thy holy name, and meditate upon Thy commandments, in order that I may acquire a better knowledge of Thy holy will, and accomplish it with more fidelity. Wherefore enlighten my understanding that I may perceive what I ought to do or leave undone for the promotion of Thy glory and my own salvation; at the same time excite my will, that I may repent with my whole heart of my past sins, and resolve for the future to do all that Thou requirest of me. Grant me above all to know Jesus, my divine Teacher and Guide, more clearly, that I may love Him more dearly, and consequently labor, struggle and suffer with greater generosity and self-sacrifice in imitation of His example. Holy Mary, Mother of God and my Mother, show Jesus to me now, and let me study thy divine Son to the salvation of my soul. Holy Guardian Angel, keep far from me all distracting thoughts; my patron saint, come to my assistance. Amen.

On the Rich Man Who Planned to Build Greater Barns.

Represent to yourself the rich man, imagine the satisfaction, the self-complacency with which he contemplates the abundant harvest his lands have produced. He already foresees that his barns will be too small to contain all the fruits of the earth with which God has blessed him. He calculates and deliberates as to what he shall do, and he makes his plans as if he had yet many years to live.
1st. Consider the rich man’s good fortune. We read in St. Luke’s gospel: “The land of a certain rich man brought forth plenty of fruits.” (xii. 16.) That rich man was covetous and godless, yet God bestowed on him copious blessings. If you look around you in the world, you will find as a general rule that the ungodly are not unfrequently very prosperous. Jeremias says: “Why is it well with all them that transgress and do wickedly?” (xii. 1.) And Job asks: “Why are the wicked advanced and strengthened with riches?” (xxi. 7.) St. Gregory the Great gives us an answer to this. He says it is for this reason, in order that more severe chastisements should one day be the portion of those who in this life are not touched by the bountiful gifts they receive. Their prosperity is at the same time a proof of God’s bountiful kindness and His terrible justice. The just God of His bounty chooses to reward them here on earth for the little good they do, that He may punish them all the more hereafter; He seeks to win them by His beneficence before He is compelled to interpose with His judgments. But as for the most part the ungodly do not understand His charitable design, the ease and affluence in which they live is nothing more or less than the repast provided for criminals on the eve of execution. No more than you would dream of envying the condemned criminal or of counting him happy because of the dainties set before him, ought you, my soul, to envy the wicked on account of the luxury and comfort they enjoy. You ought rather to feel hearty compassion for those unhappy sinners. And should you yourself be one of the ungodly who prosper in this world, say, how can you possibly sit at ease at this last meal of the condemned?
2d. Consider the rich man’s temporal disquiet and trouble. His eyes have not long dwelt with complacent delight on his fruitful lands and abundant crops before the anxious thought arises in his mind: “What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?” (v. 17.) Behold, St. Basil says, even in the midst of abundance this man is uneasy and solicitous: his temporal goods cause him vexation, fear, perplexity. The ungodly, for all their wealth, their vast possessions, are strangers to real peace. How just therefore is what we read in the Imitation of Christ: “Many weak and shortsighted men say, Behold how well such a man lives, how rich he is, how great, how mighty and powerful. But fix thine eyes on heavenly goods and thou wilt see that all these temporal things are no goods at all; but are very uncertain and rather burdensome, because they are never possessed with out care and fear.” Were you, my soul, given to see the distress, the, anxiety, the trouble of the heart that beats beneath a gorgeous purple robe; could you listen to the words of woe, the painful consultations that are to be heard within marble palaces; could you take the bitter drops which a guilty conscience, harassing cares mingle in the worldling’s cup of joy, you would give God thanks and rejoice in your poverty and the lowliness of your position.
3d. Consider the rich man’s end. “I will pull down my barns and will build greater; and I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years, take thy rest, eat, drink, make good cheer.” (v. 18, 19.) Such is the singular reflection wherewith the fortunate rich man composes himself to sleep. In regard to this St. Basil exclaims: What folly, what frivolity! Hadst thou had a soul like that of the swine what worse thing couldst thou have said? But what happened to this man of increasing wealth? “Thou fool, this night do they require thy soul; and whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?” (v. 20.) Such are the words God speaks to him. How quickly has everything been altered for this unhappy rich man! How speedily has the terrible truth formulated by holy Job been fulfilled in his case! “They spend their days in wealth and in a moment they go down to hell.” (Job xxi. 13.) Of what use to him now are his barns, his fertile lands, his plans and projects? One night, one unlooked for night robs him of all, and he passes in a moment from temporal to eternal night. O my soul, with this deplorable end before your eyes, do not strive to be rich in earthly goods, but lay to heart our Lord’s words: “So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God.” (v. 21.) Now he is rich towards God who does not possess an abundance of gold and silver, but who is rich in virtue, in the love of God and of his neighbor, in good works. Ask yourself whether you can call such treasures your own. Of them you may, you ought to have an abundance; and in regard to these spiritual fruits it is well for you if you can say: “Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years.” Can you utter these words with truth?

PRAYER AFTER MEDITATION.

My God, I give Thee heartfelt thanks for all the graces and all the light Thou hast conferred on me during this meditation. Pardon me all the negligence and the distractions of which I have been guilty, and give me strength to carry out the resolutions that I have made. Fortify me, that from henceforth I may diligently practise this virtue . . . avoid this fault . . . perform this action . . . to Thy honor. Help me to do this, sweet Virgin Mary; and if I ever forget my good resolutions, I entreat my Angel Guardian to recall them to my memory. Amen.

September Devotion: The Holy Cross

Virtues to practice: Piety, fervor in the performance of sacred duties, the spirit of prayer

O Mary, most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, accept the sincere homage of my filial affection. Into thy heart, pierced by so many swords, do thou welcome my poor soul. Receive it as the companion of thy sorrows at the foot of the Cross, on which Jesus died for the redemption of the world. With thee, O sorrowful Virgin, I will gladly suffer all the trials, contradictions, and infirmities which it shall please our Lord to send me. I offer them all to thee in memory of thy sorrows, so that every thought of my mind, and every beat of my heart may be an act of compassion and of love for thee. And do thou, sweet Mother, have pity on me, reconcile me to thy divine Son Jesus, keep me in His grace and assist me in my last agony, so that I may be able to meet thee in heaven and sing thy glories. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Joseph Calasanctius, Confessor.

Saint Joseph Calasanctius, protector of youth, great servant of Our Lord, who didst work such marvels in their behalf; thou who, having made thyself a mirror for them of burning charity, of unwearied patience, of deep humility, of angelic purity and of every other heroic virtue, by a holy example, by words full of the Spirit of God, didst inspire them to flee dangerous occasions, to hate sin, to detest vicious courses, and to love piety and devotion, and thus didst guide countless souls to Heaven; thou who didst obtain for them the visible benediction of the Child Jesus and His holy Mother, obtain the like for us, thy humble and devoted servants; obtain for us a lasting hatred for sin, victory in the midst of temptation, and help in time of danger, so that, by living in the perfect observance of the law of God, we may attain to eternal salvation. Amen.

A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is said with devotion every day for a month (Leo XIII, Audience, October 19, 1897; S. P. Ap., April 12, 1932 and June 12, 1949.).


A Mother’s Prayer to St. Augustine for her Children.

O God, Who enlightened St. Augustine by Thy grace, and inflamed him with Thy love in the midst of the darkness and miseries of a life of sin, have mercy likewise on my poor soul and upon those of my children and relatives! Pardon our ingratitude, our disobedience, our want of reverence, our indifference, finally, all the offenses of which we have ever been guilty against Thy Holy Name. We acknowledge that there is in this world no pain or punishment so severe as that which we deserve; therefore, full of dread of what is in store for us, we invoke the intercession of Thy holy servant Augustine, so inflamed with love of Thee!

O holy penitent Augustine, seraph of divine love, unspeakable miracle of Divine Mercy, obtain for us from God a true, perfect, and heartfelt sorrow for our sins, a devout and constant love of God, a love that triumphs over all difficulties, temptations, and tribulations, a wise and unremitting fervor in the observances of the divine Commandments and the fulfillment of our duties! Assist us especially in the training of our children. Behold to how many dangers their virtue and innocence are exposed in the world! See how numerous are the snares and deceits prepared for the ruin of their souls by the flesh, and through the words and example of evil and worldly-minded men! If they do not receive extraordinary help, how can they withstand such allurements? O great St. Augustine, take them under your protection! To our efforts in their behalf, join your intercession for them with God.

Exert all your influence and, with the compassion of your loving heart, intercede with the Most Holy Trinity for them. Permit not that our children, sanctified in the waters of Baptism, should through mortal sin be banished from the presence of God and suffer eternal punishment. Preserve them from the greatest of all evils here below, namely, that of denying the love of Jesus Christ, through affection to some creature or the fear of some misfortune. No, O great St. Augustine! Rather let them and us, their parents, die in the grace of God, than live to offend Him mortally! This favor we implore through your intercession, O holy son of a sainted mother, you who gladly receive and graciously hear the prayers of a mother! I confidently hope that you have already heard my petitions, and that you will obtain for me a favorable answer from God! Amen.


Prayer of Pope St. Pius X

O most sweet Jesus! Who didst come into the world to give to all souls the life of Thy grace, and Who, to preserve and foster it in them, hast willed to become the daily remedy of their infirmity and their food for each day, we humbly beseech Thee through Thy Sacred Heart, burning with love for us, to pour out Thy Divine Spirit upon all souls, in order that those who, unhappily, are in mortal sin may be converted to Thee and recover the life of grace which they have lost, and that those who by Thy help are already living in this Divine life, may, when it is possible for them, approach Thy Holy Table every day; so that daily receiving in Holy Communion the antidote of their daily venial sins, and daily nourishing in themselves the life of Thy grace, thus ever purifying their souls more and more, they may at last arrive at the possession of the life of eternal happiness. Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel.

Most glorious prince of the heavenly hosts, Archangel St. Michael, defend us in the battle and in the tremendous struggle we carry on against the Principalities and Powers, against the rulers of the world of darkness and all evil spirits. Come to the help of man, whom God created immortal, fashioned to His own image and likeness, and rescued at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. With the great army of the holy angels fight to-day the battle of the Lord as thou didst of old fight against Lucifer, the leader of the proud, and his apostate angels, who were powerless against thee, and they had no longer a place in heaven; and that monster, the old serpent who is called the devil and Satan, that seduces the whole world, was cast into hell with his angels. But now that first enemy and homicide has regained his insolent boldness. Taking on the appearance of an angel of light, he has invaded the earth, and, with his whole train of evil spirits, he is prowling about among men, striving to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to capture, to destroy, to drag to eternal perdition the souls destined to the crown of eternal glory. That malignant dragon is pouring abroad, like a foul stream, into the souls of men of ruined intellect and corrupt heart the poison of his wickedness, the spirit of lying, of impiety and blasphemy, the pestilent breath of impurity and of all vice and iniquity. Most cunning enemies have filled with bitterness and drenched with gall the Church, the Spouse of the Lamb without spot, and have lifted impious hands against all that is most sacred in it. Even in the holy place where the See of Blessed Peter and the chair of truth was set up to enlighten the world, they have raised the abominable throne of their impiety with the iniquitous hope that the Shepherd may be stricken and the flock scattered abroad. Arise, then, unconquerable Prince, defend the people of God against the assaults of the reprobate spirits, and give them the victory. Holy Church reveres thee as its guardian and patron; it glories in thee as its defender against the malignant powers of hell; to thee God has committed the souls that are to be conveyed to the seats of the Blessed in eternal happiness. Pray, then, to the God of peace, that He may put Satan under our feet, so completely vanquished that he may no longer be able to hold men in bondage and work harm to the Church. Offer up our prayers before the Most High, so that the mercies of the Lord may prevent us, and lay hold of the dragon, the old serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and hurl him bound in chains into the abyss where he may no longer seduce the souls of men. Amen.

And since thou art the “physician of God,” I humbly pray thee to heal my soul of its many infirmities and my body of the ills that afflict it, if this favor is for my greater good. The Sovereign Pontiff, Pius VI., by a brief, Oct. 2, 1795, granted to all the faithful, every time that, with at least contrite heart and devotion, they shall say this prayer:
AN INDULGENCE OF ONE HUNDRED DAYS.
A PLENARY INDULGENCE, on the feast of the holy guardian angels (Oct. 2), to those who shall have said this prayer, morning and evening, throughout the year, provided that, on the day of the feast, being truly penitent, after confession and communion, they shall visit a church or public oratory, and pray for the Sovereign Pontiff.
The same Sovereign Pontiff, by a rescript of the S. Congr. of Indulgences, June 11, 1796, granted:
A PLENARY INDULGENCE, at the hour of death, to all those who, during life, shall have frequently said this prayer, provided they shall have the proper dispositions.

The Sovereign Pontiff, Pius VII., by a rescript of the S. Congr. of Indulgences, May 15, 1821, not only confirmed the above mentioned indulgences, but, moreover, granted:
A PLENARY INDULGENCE, once a month, to all the faithful who shall have said it every day for a month, as above directed, on any day, when, being truly penitent, after confession and communion, they shall visit a church, and pray devoutly for the intention of his Holiness.

NOVENA IN HONOR OF THE GUARDIAN ANGEL.

The Sovereign Pontiff, Pius IX., by a rescript dated at Gaeta, Jan. 5, 1849, and by another of the S. Congr. of Bishops and Regulars, Jan. 28, 1850, granted to all the faithful who, with contrite hearts, at any time during the year, devoutly make the novena in honor of the Guardian Angel, published by the Rev. Joseph M. Falcone, of the Congregation of the Missions:
AN INDULGENCE OF ONE HUNDRED DAYS, once a day.
A PLENARY INDULGENCE, either during the novena or upon one of the eight days immediately following, if, truly penitent, they confess and communicate, and say some prayers for the holy Church and for the Sovereign Pontiff.
By a rescript of the S. Congr. of Indulgences, Nov. 26, 1876, the same Sovereign Pontiff deigned to approve that these indulgences may be gained by those who make the novena to the Guardian Angel with any other formula of prayer, provided it be approved by competent ecclesiastical authority.
